Medvezhjegorsk region is the place with a long history. It is a reserve of traditional culture of Karelian and Russian people that keeps original traditions of wooden architecture and folklore of Karelia. This region is situated in various nature landscapes from the skerries of Zaonezhje till the rapid rivers and deep lakes in the northwestern part rich in fish. The main pearl of the region is Zaonezhje. It is a peninsula in the Northern part of Onego lake including the famous island of Kizhi where there is the world significant monument – Kizhi Pogost and ethnographical and architectural open-air museum. Zaonezhje is rich in monuments of wooden architecture – churches, chapels, houses, mills and granaries built in the XVII-XX centuries. The famous Russian epics about Russian epic heroes were written down in Zaonezhje in the XIX century. Vigorezia is the place of the old belief in the northeast from the Povenets bay of Onego lake and Upper Volozero lake. Vogorezia or Vigovskoe Community was founded in 1694 by old-believers. Danilovski Monastery became the center of this community that later on in the XVIII – XIX centuries turned into the religious and economic center of the Russian North.
